What is DISC?
DISC is a workplace-behavior assessment built around four styles: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. It measures how a person tends to behave in a work environment — pace, priorities, and response to pressure — rather than deep personality traits. It's the most widely used behavioral assessment in Fortune 500 companies because it's fast, memorable, and directly actionable for sales, hiring, and team communication.
The four styles
D — Dominance: results-focused, decisive, direct, comfortable with conflict, impatient with detail.
I — Influence: people-focused, enthusiastic, persuasive, optimistic, can under-deliver on details.
S — Steadiness: team-focused, patient, dependable, harmony-seeking, resistant to abrupt change.
C — Conscientiousness: task-focused, analytical, precise, quality-driven, can be perfectionistic.

Most people are a blend of two styles — the primary drives their default behavior, the secondary shows up under pressure. A DI reads as fast-moving and people-oriented; a CS reads as careful and stability-seeking. Understanding your primary and secondary is more useful than fixating on a single letter, and it explains why two 'D' types can still work very differently.
DISC at work: sales, hiring, and management
DISC is especially strong for adapting communication: high-D buyers want bottom-line and options; high-C buyers want data and process; high-I buyers want vision and social proof; high-S buyers want reassurance and continuity. Managers who tailor delivery to a report's DISC profile see measurably faster onboarding and lower first-year turnover. EQIQs surfaces DISC-driven communication tips inside every profile.
DISC compatibility across styles
Opposite styles (D and S, I and C) often complement each other but need explicit norms to avoid friction — a high-D manager can steamroll a high-S report without meaning to. Same-style pairings (two Ds, two Cs) move quickly on shared priorities but can reinforce blind spots. EQIQs pairs DISC with attachment and conflict style so the compatibility signal isn't dominated by any single lens.
